This posting is intended for future temporary Labourer opportunities within Parks Operations that may arise during the Spring/Summer 2025 season. We encourage you to explore the full list of available job opportunities that may be of interest to you.Assists with seasonal maintenance activities in our City's Parks, Open Space Areas, Trails, Sports Fields, Playgrounds, Cemeteries, Woodlots, Shrub & Flower Beds and other City-Owned properties. Primary activities include turf cutting and trimming maintenance, sports field maintenance, collecting litter and debris, emptying garbage bins, weeding, mulching, pruning of trees and shrubs, applying salt and removing snow/ice on municipal sidewalks and City-owned facilities. To perform and complete these tasks, Labourer’s are required and responsible for safely operating hand-held tools, small engine power tools, push mowers and snow blowers, as well as to drive ride-on equipment, tractors and Class G vehicles.
General Labourer Function for Various Operations (Parks Operations and Forestry):• Performs general maintenance of parks, woodlots, open spaces, sports fields and courts, playgrounds, and all City owned properties.• Cutting and trimming of grass areas, sports field maintenance, collecting litter and debris, planting and general maintenance of flowers and shrubs as well as trees, as it relates to the job function.• Operates various City vehicles and equipment including but not limited to tractors, crew cab trucks, trailers, multi-deck riding mowers, water trucks, loaders, trimmers, field liners, hand-held tools, etc.• Assists in the set-up and tear-down of equipment and items required for special events, such as picnic tables, tables, garbage cans and chairs.• Collection of litter and debris on City-owned properties, such as parks, sport fields, playgrounds, park walkways and trails, and City-owned facilities.• Assists with the general maintenance in City-owned cemeteries, as required.• Assist in the Beautification program by planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, repairing and cultivating-flower and shrub beds, hanging baskets, barrels, and planters as directed by the horticulture maintenance schedule.Reporting Administration• Records and completes daily assignments, individual duties performed, and equipment used through completion inspection forms, logbooks and any other related documents.Customer Service• Responds courteously to any inquiries from the general public and escalate questions and/or concerns to their direct Supervisor.Other Duties• Responds to emergency situations, including seasonal events (i.e. flooding, etc.), as required.• Assists with moving equipment and materials to and from designated work areas, as required.• Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, including the corporate Occupational Health and Safety Policy and other related policies and procedures.• Performs other related duties, as assigned, that are in accordance with job responsibilities or necessary departmental or corporate objectives.
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or suitable equivalent.• One (1) year work experience in landscaping, maintenance or construction, forestry, horticulture, municipal service environment or similar experience.• Valid Class Ontario “G” Driver’s License in good standing with satisfactory driver’s abstract.• Ability to perform moderate to manual labor.• Ability to operate ride-on mowers, tractors, push mowers, string trimmers, hand-held snow blowers, and other related equipment.• Ability to drive class “G” vehicles (pick-up trucks, cube vans, etc.) with trailers attached.• Ability to attach trailers to tow hitches on class “G” vehicles.Working Conditions• Majority of job requirements are performed outdoors in all weather conditions.• Available to work beyond regular working hours (evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.) as required and in accordance with the Collective Agreement.• Ability to perform physical demands of the job, including lifting to 20kg.• Required to wear personal protective equipment and provide own CSA approved safety boots with green patch and a minimum 6” ankle height.
